Jochen Mühlenbrink, a German contemporary artist born in 1980, is renowned for his technically accomplished trompe-l’œil paintings that challenge the boundaries between illusion and reality. Through meticulous depictions of fogged windows, torn posters, tape, condensation and other seemingly ordinary surfaces, Mühlenbrink transforms familiar visual experiences into sophisticated studies of perception, memory and representation. What initially appears to be glass, paper or an everyday object is often constructed entirely through layers of oil and acrylic paint, inviting the viewer to question what is real and what has been fabricated. Mühlenbrink studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he became a Meisterschüler of celebrated German painter Markus Lüpertz, before developing the distinctive visual language for which he is now recognised.
