Richard Hambleton

About the Artist

Richard Hambleton was a pioneering street artist and a key figure in the emergence of urban art in the late twentieth century, often regarded as one of the original founders of the movement alongside contemporaries such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He is best known for his iconic Shadowman series, through which he transformed public spaces into sites of psychological tension and visual intrigue. His life sized silhouetted figures, painted directly onto the streets of New York in the late 1970s and 1980s, appeared suddenly and dramatically, evoking both fear and fascination. Through this distinctive visual language, Hambleton explored themes of anonymity, presence, and the darker undercurrents of urban life, creating works that are as much about atmosphere and experience as they are about form.
